I'd go for the live 1961 Knappertsbusch on Phillips (now reissued
at mid-price) The conducting is more involved than the glossy Karajan
approach.  Also Hotter and London are fine singers.  I'd supplement it
with the 1928 recordings by Karl Muck on Naxos.
