Tim Mahon is taking up the violin again, and asks:

>So, Listers -- any suggestions for music I should buy to help me along this
>path? I guess I'm looking for brief sonatas or sonatinas (or similar pieces
>for keyboard and violin) that are a) not too difficult b) tuneful enough to
>reward study and practice and c) easily available through mail order.

If you're you're not averse to older (17th and 18th century) music, I know
of a place where you can download (for free) full scores and individual
parts for pieces such as the Telemann Essercizi Musici, Sonatae Unarum
Fidium by Schmelzer, and lots more--some of it is for larger ensemble, but
you can still practice on the parts; others are solo sonatas for violin or
other instruments and keyboard/continuo. Of course, music from this era
often is a bit sparse on the notation, all the better to practice one's
improvisational ornamentation skills!

It's set up in Sweden by Johan Tufvesson, and you can download and print
the music via Adobe Acrobat (after setting it up for the anachronistic 8.5
by 11 inch paper size we use in the States). Go here:

Hope there's something of interest.
