The National Park Service is recruiting for a Cultural/Natural Resource Program
Manager at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway, AK.

The salary for this position is GS-12, $48,520 per year -- $62,605 per year
(plus a "tax-exempt" 25% of base salary in locality pay).

This is an interdisciplinary position which may be filled as a Historian;
Cultural Anthropologist; Archeologist; Landscape Architect; or Architect
(Historic Structures).  Individuals without prior federal service are welcome to

Summary of Duties:  This position will serve as Chief of the newly created
Division of Resources Management (Natural and Cultural) at Klondike Gold Rush
National Historical Park. The position will require supervision of a cultural
resource specialist, natural resource specialist, and curator and will be
responsible for program development and implementation in those areas.
Supervision will also involve overseeing summer seasonal and volunteer staff
involved in the survey, inventory, and monitoring work in the Skagway, White
Pass, and Dyea/Chilkoot Trail units of the park.  Duties will include
coordinating the efforts of subordinates and others in the preparation of the
Resources Management Plan and specific action plans pertaining to the management
and protection of cultural and natural resources; represent the park on regional
task groups and will make presentations at public gatherings and at professional
meetings; developing and maintaining peer relationships with researchers,
subject matter experts, and resource managers of other agencies, cooperating
universities, traditionally associated groups, and other such entities;
maintaining liaisons with cultural and natural resource agencies managed by the
state of Alaska and close coordination with the city's Historic District
Commission; oversee NEPA and Section 106 compliance activities and ensure that
park projects are conducted in a manner that protects cultural and natural
resources while complying with applicable federal laws, regulations, and
guidelines; working knowledge of various automated tools associated with
contemporary resource management programs.

AREA INFORMATION: Skagway, Alaska is located on the north end of Taiya Inlet on
Lynn Canal, 90 air miles northwest of Juneau, AK.  Skagway is the northern
terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway, Southeast Alaska ferry system.  Skagway
is the southern terminus of the Klondike Highway #2, which connects Skagway to
the Alaska Highway near Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. It is also a year-round
seaport along a beautiful network of fjords.  Skagway is the oldest incorporated
city in Alaska.  Tourism is Skagway's main economic base, but only a miniscule
amount of tourist activity takes place during the winter.  Skagway has a
population of approximately 800 year-round residents. The town offers a school
(K-12), grocery store, hardware store, two cafes, library, community recreation
center, post office, video shop, news/book store, coffee shop and churches of
several denominations.  During the summer visitation season, there are many more
restaurants and retail outlets available and excellent hiking is found in close
proximity to town.  Major purchases usually are made either through the mail or
by trips to the outside.  There is a small clinic for minor medical treatment.
Major medical and dental facilities are available in Juneau and Anchorage,
Alaska, Seattle, Washington or Whitehorse, Canada.  Access to Skagway is by
small aircraft, Alaska ferry system or highway (Klondike Highway).  Average
high/low daily temperatures in January: 26/16 degrees F; in July: 68/50 degrees
F.  Average annual precipitation is 26.5 inches.  Popular backcountry skiing,
snowmobile, and snowshoe areas are located about 15-20 miles north of town.
