The best source would be to track down a copy of the Bannerman Catalog. These
were produced from the post Civil War to about 1930. I have a copy from 1927.
Bannerman and his kin salvaged from battlefields and scrounged Europe for
weapons, equipment, uniforms etc. and sold them via his catalogs. Today,
military collectors own those catalogs as the guide to identification.
