While bees may be able to get all they need from pollen, I wonder if the
query could be for times when bees are being fed. There are pollen
substitutes and supplements on the market from reputable supplies. If sugar
syrup is a carbohydrate replacement, and soy is protein, maybe they do need
some of the "vital amigos"?
