I could not stand baby saliva anywhere around my neck. This came from
a childhood experience of a dog licking me.
When either daughter was rooting and got saliva on my neck, I got goose
bumps all over and felt a feeling in the back of my throat as though my
tongue was dry and I could feel all the taste buds at once. I became
nauseaus (sp).
The childhood conditioning was part of it, but I also wonder if I was
hydrated enough. Since breastfeeding makes one very thirsty and dry in
the mouth when the letdown happens, I wonder if my tongue was becoming
truly dry and super sensitive touching my palate.
Even today, I remember what I used to call it when I was a kid--from the
Peanuts comic strip "dog kisses, ugh!"
According to a vet I asked, some people are truly allergic to dog or cat
saliva, particularly the enzymes in the saliva. When the offending
animals licks them, they get sick.
