I know one early composer who's well known in both circles: Michael
Praetorius.  His musical works number in the hundreds, but he did do a bit
of writing on his own music as well as the music of the time (his "Syntagma
Musicum").

Robert Schumann, of course, wrote quite a bit and founded a music journal,
whose title escapes me at the moment.

However, if Alex is referring to a composer who wrote fiction or authored
"popular" works, then I have no idea.
