The late 1980s recordings by harpsichordist Davitt Moroney of three
crowning keyboard works of Bach - the two books of the Well-Tempered
Clavier, the Art of Fugue, and the Musical Offering - are gathered together
in a 7-CD set from Harmonia Mundi, and are now available at Berkshire
Record Outlet for the incredible price of about $21, $3 per disc. This
collection had been mentioned a year ago, favorably, by Ulvi Yurtsever,
when it was still at full-price.
The performances are sterling. I'd first come to admire Moroney in his
first William Byrd set probably twenty years ago. (He's since re-recorded
that music, fairly recently.)
He uses a 1980 harpsichord made by John Phillips. It has a gentle,
non-nasal tone.
