I am reminded of a similar experience of mine in Lava Tree National
Monument on the Big Island of Hawaii.  I had a micro- cassette recorder
with me that I used to record notes and ambient sounds.  There were a lot
of birds hidden in the dense foliage, singing.  I taped some calls, and
when I played them back to listen, provoked a storm of response from the
birds...
