I should not have replied so quickly.
Asking around, I find there is still some gut used, and that it was
preferred by some famous violonists of the early 20th century. I do not
think it is very common now, and it was a notable exception even then.
Also, note that I found reference only to the opposite of what Mimi said:
That gut might be used for the lowest-sounding strings with steel for the
highest. I suppose the opposite is also possible, but makes less sense.
Anyway, I should have said "They are generally strung with steel."
