Different folks are bothered by different sources. I found that the
Nimbus sound became shrill in the loudest passages; either the American
Record Guide or Fanfare reviewer mentioned the same condition, although that
reviewer thought the problem was the Artis Quartet while I think it's the
sound quality. I mentioned it just in case someone bought the disc, didn't
appreciate the sound, and was critical of my review for not pointing it out
when I knew it existed.
Unlike Len, I didn't have any problems with the performers' breathing
noises; that never bothers me even if the subject is Glenn Gould's humming.
I've had the experience of having to absorb my cat's prevalent whining
ways; once you have adjusted to that noise, just about anything else is
easier to deal with except for modern violins in Baroque works.
As an aside, I'd just like to relate my appreciation of Len's CD review
site; new reviews every two days, well written, is much liked by this list
member.
