The other night here in Munich I caught the Concertgebouw doing Bruckner
7 under the baton of Chailly. It turned out to be Bruckner lite--well, at
least Frenchified, which my ear attributed mainly to the the very French
sound of the woodwinds. That was helped along by the spectacle of the
basses bowing like the French do, cello-wise. It was the first time I
experienced the Concertgebouw live. Delightful! (I'd never divined their
peculiar sound in my recordings).
