I remember, howsowever dimly at this point, in 1948, hearing/seeing
Dimitri Mitropoulos conduct "The Firebird." I was interested in his
baton-less conducting since I had not seen that previously. At one point,
I believe it was where the firebird appears in the first part, he raised
one hand and moved only his fingers as the Minneapolis Symphony reflected
the coruscations of the bird. I was enchanted (of course, I'm much more
sophisiticated and worldly now). One other matter: Mitropoulos' head/hair
style was 50 years ahead of its time.
