Ed Beach has WMNR radio in his Connecticut locale and wonders about other
places. The Boston area has WCRB, a private station which is awesomely
bland and unadventurous, It gets worse and worse, although the programmers
are under the impression that Mozart is bland and unadventurous, so a
Mozart block is a morning fixture. After Midnight they are better, and
they still do the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts and the BSO. The two
public radio stations differ significantly. WBUR was a great classical
station about 20 years ago, but now it is all talk, and money is raised
under a cult-like " more news, less fund raising" slogan. WGBH still does
classical music and jazz as well as the obligatory Public Radio All Things
Considered, which therefore appears in two places on the Greater Boston
dial. The classical music is getting blander as time goes on. Last but
not least is the Harvard University station, WHRB. This is an excellent
classical station until 10 at night, when the very hard rockers take over.
They are particularly good during exam periods - like now - when they
present great continuous dedicated blocks of time - orgies. They just
finished a memorable Chopin orgy, with lots of interesting historical
performances. They do tend to vanish during academic holidays, but
that is a small thing compared to the contribution the station makes.
