Deryk Barker posts from a contemporary review in the Allgemeine
musikalische Zeitung:
> The symphony would be all the better - it lasts a whole hour - if
> Beethoven could reconcile himself to making some cuts in it and to
> bringing to the score more light, clarity and unity.
But the AMZ's hour could be Gardiner's 50 minutes, isn't it? Did the AMZ
reviewer time the pauses between movements? Were they as short as those on
the the Gardiner cd? Did he look at his watch before or after the applause
(or boos as the case may be)? What does "it lasts a whole hour" really mean
in this case? 60 digital cd minutes?
