Ernest Farrar was a lesser-known English composer who was killed after two
days at the front in 1918. He was taught by Stanford and taught Finzi, so
there's a continuum of sorts there. Chandos CHAN 9586 contains 72 minutes
of very approachable orchestral music including Variations for Piano and
Orchestra and a tone poem, The Forsaken Merman, after a Matthew Arnold
poem.
