I'm on call 25% of the time for my pediatric patients, and almost 100% of the
time for my breastfeeding patients. I find that letting moms know that there
is someone available to talk to them whenever they need it actually seems to
decrease my calls (they just seem to relax knowing that they're not really
alone). I also talk to parents about routine calls Vs urgent calls, and
encourage them to call during office hours for the routine or long-standing
problems, but they are told that if something WORRIES them, they should call!
(I often tell a story about a mom who called at 2 a.m. "just curious" if
there was a way to tell an "innie" from an "outie" bellybutton at one month,
as an example of a call that really could have waited!)
