Linda, the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management in southern
Utah and Arizona use motion detectors to monitor possible illegal activity in
rockshelters with cultural deposits.  They work well, from what I have heard.
 For first hand information, you might try calling Stan McDonald,
Archaeologist, at the Manti La Sal National Forest in Price, Utah at
435-637-2817 or Bruce Louthan, Archaeologist, at the Moab Field Office of the
Bureau of Land Management in Moab, Utah at 435-259-2154.
