During the interesting discussion on motels I mentioned the Society
for Commercial Archaeology and several of you have asked (off line)
for membership information. I do not know if the SCA has a home page
so this is how you can join.
The Society for Commerical Archaeology is concerned with the "above
ground archaeology" of the 20th century, especially what can be called
"road side culture" - motels, fast food restaurants, gas stations, shopping
centers, signage, etc. etc. The SCA is made up of research scholars and
enthusiasts - a nice mixture. It has a journal (2 issues a year) and a
quarterly Newsletter. Both are excellent sources for bibliographic sources
on many topics that will interests archaeologists. The SCA also holds an
annual meeting (I think all to date in the US (Canada?)), which is very
enjoyable. I have only been able to make two (in May in LA and Wildwood,
N.J. - SHA always comes first!) and one of the highlights is a series of
guided tours in which the guides are really experts on the sites and
locations.
