What occurred to me, that some years ago, there was a movie about a women's
prison camp in Indonesia (I believe) during Japanese occupation. Because
there were some musicians, but no instruments, the women started to 'sing'
famous movements of instrumental music, and I don't know if this piece was
also sung (but of course, there's a large probability) A soundtrack CD was
released, as I thought from a Dutch choir from Haarlem (at the time, I
worked there). I have neither seen the movie nor heard the soundtrack, but
will look further into it. I thought it starred someone like Meryl Streep
or Isabella Rosselini in the movie.
Regards,
Pieter Bijlsma
[I believe Pieter is referring to the 1997 movie Paradise Road starring
Glenn Close, Frances McDormand, and Cate Blanchett among others. It
the story of a group of women captured in Singapore by the Japanese
during WWII and held in a concentration camp. Close's character, a
graduate of Royal Academy of Music, organizes a voice orchestra using
scores written from memory. The film had original music by Ross Edwards.
I have not yet seen this movie. -Dave]
