I'm not clear on what a "proper" introduction would consist of.
Personally, atonal music comes drifting my way from time to time, and
I never try to dodge it; but, it isn't high on my list of priorities.

I think that humans are largely creatures of habit with strong territorial
instincts.  They like what they know and what's familiar to them.  They
hear atonal music, immediately dislike it, and then go out of their way to
stay clear of it.  For most folks, music is strictly for entertainment
purposes - learning and appreciating new music styles is not for them.
