Well, it won't come as a surprise, but I cannot help recommending his
recording of Kenins's violin concerto. This is more "modern" than the
above-quoted pieces, of course, but wonderfully written for the violin,
masterfully orchestrated, and very inspiring as a whole. Paul Rapoport,
I think, has written that Kenins's 4th symphony might be his best concerto,
while his violin concerto would be his best symphony. I do not quite agree
with either statement, but still this is one of the finest violin concertos
of the century IMHO, and the 4th symphony is gripping, even though I find
the 6th still more essential. Staryk's rendition is very good.
Staryk has recorded quite a few LPs. I don't know precisely which ones
have been released on CD, but in any case I'd advise you to visit the
Canadian Music Centre website, in particular:
http://www.musiccentre.ca/ds/ds.html
They might be able to give you more information.
Something I would very much like to hear is George Fiala's violin concerto.
It was premiered by Staryk, both Fiala and Staryk being Canadians of
Ukrainian ascent. From what I know by this composer, I could not say that
he is of the same importance as Kenins, but his Kurelek Suite, inspired by
the famous Ukrainian painter, is a very attractive and lovely work. I hope
it helps, Best wishes,
