Mimi Ezust from the smart side of the Charles:
>We certainly have enough first-class musicians to play in the pit and sing
>on the stage. It's a huge mystery to me why there isn't flourishing opera
>here. We've got everything else. I'd organize an opera company myself but
>I'm about a billion short.
Which billion is likely the heart of the matter. The BSO does well in
fund raising, I believe, and there are in Boston, many choral, orchestral
and chamber groups, even a ballet company, which manage to keep going on
grants and on donations from enthusiasts. Opera surely requires a heck of
a lot more money even if a decent hall is available. I do agree with Mimi
- there is a public. Build an opera company (and maybe an opera house)
and they will come. there was. after all, a great outcry when our rather
pallid local private classical music station found a reason to discontinue
the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. Fortunately WHRB on Mimi's side of the
Charles came to the rescue.
