Differing interpretations:
Ma, Casals, Niekrug
Niekrug focuses on the smoothness of his fret board work makes his Bach
an experience in fluidity. He takes Bach in very long legato sections.
As someone who is not a "celebrity" you may not know his work - but it
is worth seeking out.
Casals loeved to find many different ways through a work, his approach
made accents fall in very different pplaces based on the fingering, he
breaks Bach into smaller sections.
Ma is well known for his tone, by searching for the way to make each note
sing with a bright full sound, he produces a very strong contrast between
skipping tight figures and sustained notes.
