Paganini was a great lover of opera, and his violin concerti are modelled
upon the operatic form. The middle movement of his Second Violin Concerto
is quite dramatic, and deserves a careful listen. A legend grew up around
that movement, stating that Paganini had composed it while in prison, on a
violin with only one string. While some of the Caprices are indeed boring,
I find much to admire in them. However, for a truly satisfying Paganini
experience, I highly recommend his Violin Concerto no. 5, available on
Deutsche Grammophon with Salvatore Accardo as soloist.
