HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGIST


The Louisiana Division of Archaeology has an opening on its staff for a
historical archaeologist.

Duties:

        The duties of the historical archaeologist include managing the
division's State permit program, assisting in the preparation of National
Register archaeological nominations, reviewing historical archaeological
survey, testing, and data recovery reports under Section 106 review;
overseeing NAGPRA-related issues and the underwater archaeology program,
updating the state's comprehensive archaeological plan; helping in the
development of museum exhibits, slide and tape shows and public information
brochures relating to historical archaeology; and developing programs which
increase interest in historical archaeology.

Qualifications and Selection Process:

        The archaeologist must have a master's degree in anthropology with a
specialty in archaeology plus two years of professional level experience in
New World archaeological research.  Further, the archaeologist must have a
background in historical archaeological research including field experience
and the ability to identify and analyze historical archaeological material.
Knowledge of underwater archaeology and maritime history would be helpful
but not essential.
Database management experience necessary.

Employment:

        Salary: State of Louisiana Civil Service Level GS 15 (pay range
available upon request).
        Starting Date: February 2001, or when filled.
        Place of Employment: Division of Archaeology, Baton Rouge,
Louisiana.
