This is a list of 29 cemeteries, Philadelphia, Pa., which have
been moved. They were probably most, if not all, dug with steam
shovel, backhoe, or other equipment of the same type. There may
also be a couple that the sites missed. There was discussion last
year on the Philly Roots genealogy list about Odd Fellows
Cemetery. It seems that it was abandoned and moved in the 1950's
and a housing project built on the site. When they tore that
project down within the last couple of years to build a new type
of housing development, almost 50 years later, they found bodies
that had been overlooked earlier. It made the papers.
The reburials are usually in mass graves with no names. There
may or may not be burial records. There are genealogists who are
very upset at not being able to find ancestors. If the relatives
at the time of removal wanted a separate burial, I believe they
had to pay for it, probably complete with whatever the cemetery
and/or funeral director specify - expensive. Relatives generally
also had to pay to move the stones if they wanted them moved.
Doing genealogy, I sure wish my immigrant ancestor who died in
1784, Lancaster Co., Pa., was sitting on a shelf with an
archaeology label (Native American style;-). He was probably
bulldozed long ago. Just a lighthearted personal opinion, no
flames please:-)
