I have thus far conducted archaeological impact assessments at 11 coastal lightstations along British Columbia's coast. We have been contracted by the Canadian Coast Guard to conduct the assessments as part of their Lightstation Rejuvenation project, whereby old, outdated facilities at a number of the stations are being upgraded and/or replaced. Our focus, however, is not necessarily historical but rather primarily prehistoric native sites. Most stations along the BC coast were established in the early parts of the 20th century and many were constructed atop, beside or in the general area of native shell middens/villages, campsites, burials, lithic scatters, rock art sites, etc. Under direction from BC's Heritage Conservation Act and working with various First Nations, we have been re-recording the known sites (many of which were recorded in the 1960's/1970's but need updating), identifying any previously unrecorded sites and presenting recommendations to the Coast Guard on site avoidance and/or impact mitigation.

Perhaps the folks at the Canadian Coast Guard (Pacific Region) here in Victoria would be of some help. In doing background research for the AIA's I have seen some pretty interesting photos of early structures at many of the stations, including some of the damage they have incurred during the severe winter storms we get here on the west coast. Bob Ferguson (Lightstation Project Manager) or Kent Akhurst (Environmental Officer) should be able to help (or point in the right direction). They are at:

Tony Hewer ([log in to unmask]) is in the process of conducting
Archaeological Impact Assessments of many lighthouses on the west coast
of Canada. His research may be of some help; and he may be able to
direct your friend to some sources as well.
