STATE TERRESTRIAL ARCHEOLOGIST

Salary Range $40,820 - $61,071 (State Grade 18 - Base through 16 Steps)

The Maryland Historical Trust, an agency of the Maryland Department of
Housing and Community Development and the State Historic Preservation Office
(SHPO), is seeking qualified applicants for the position of State
Terrestrial Archeologist.  The State Terrestrial Archeologist supervises
within the Trust's Office of Archeology a range of programs to identify,
document, research, protect and interpret terrestrial archeological
resources in Maryland.

Professional Requirements:  Minimum Masters degree in anthropology,
archeology or closely related field with direct applicability to terrestrial
archeology.  A minimum of five years of full-time professional experience or
equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration
and/or management, including: at least three years of full-time professional
experience at a supervisory level directing complex archeological projects
and/or programs; and at least two years of supervised field and analytical
experience in general North American archeology, Middle Atlantic experience
preferred.  Demonstrated ability to design, implement and carry to
completion complex archeological research projects, including preparation of
scopes of work/research designs, fieldwork, analysis of data and written
reporting of results.  Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, as
well as organizational, administrative and negotiating proficiency are
essential.  Demonstrated experience in developing, organizing and
implementing archeological educational and public outreach programs such as
field schools, conferences, and partnership endeavors with amateur
archeological organizations, educational institutions and/or non-profit
entities is required.  The ability to serve as an effective team member and
leader is essential.  Required field work involves strenuous physical labor
such as hiking long distances, carrying heavy loads, manual excavation with
hand tools and working under adverse conditions.

Skills and experience in the following areas are considered desirable and
will be a factor in ranking candidates: work experience in a State or
federal Historic Preservation Office or program; knowledge of federal
historic preservation and cultural resource management statutes and
regulations; grants review and administration; strong computer knowledge and
proficiency, especially in Windows-based software, Geographic Information
Systems (GIS), and/or Internet web page development; preparation and
implementation of legislation and/or regulations for the protection of
archeological resources; positive record of raising research support through
grants and other external funding sources; record of publications.

Principal Duties, State Terrestrial Archeologist:  Under the direction of
the Chief, Office of Archeology, the State Terrestrial Archeologist provides
professional oversight and supervision for the terrestrial component of the
Maryland Office of Archeology.  Duties include supervision of one full-time
terrestrial archeologist staff member and close cooperation with other
Maryland Historical Trust archeology staff working in the areas of
compliance review, site inventory and underwater archeology.  The incumbent
administers State and federally-delegated statutory and regulatory programs
for the identification, inventory and protection of terrestrial
archeological resources, including a permitting program for archeological
investigations on State-owned and -controlled non-submerged lands and
enforcement actions for violations.  Research related duties include
engaging in and supervising Office of Archeology terrestrial archeological
research, synthesis of existing research data, encouraging research by
qualified outside organizations, universities and individuals, and assisting
in the development and oversight of terrestrial archeology regulations,
standards and guidelines.  Duties include primary responsibility for the
organization and oversight of terrestrial archeology related educational and
public outreach programs including an annual field school, public events and
publications.  Additional principal duties involve conducting emergency
salvage investigations; evaluating grant applications and administering
funded projects; responding to public inquiries, working with the Maryland
Commission on Indian Affairs and Native American groups concerning NAGPRA
and state repatriation requests and other issues of common interest; and
liaison with the Maryland Advisory Committee on Archeology, Archeological
Society of Maryland, Inc., and Council for Maryland Archeology concerning
terrestrial archeology issues.
