John Dendy says:
O-:The DoD study was on temporary wooden buildings built for the
O-:mobilization supposedly with a lifespan of 20 years. The
"rationalization"
O-:for demolition was an order by Congress in 1984 to have them all torn
down by 1992. Many
O-:are still in use and have been upgraded. FYI Point Reyes has a
O-:complete set of the Naval buildings from the period.
Yes, I know them well. I was living in one and convinced easily of the fire
trap nature of the things by cadre. We were told in '67 that because of the
layers of paint oils soaked into the dryed out wooden structures, ignition
to complete engulfment of the average structure was under two minutes, and
that it had happened over 40 times at Ft Benning alone, at night; with
casualties in the hundreds over the previous decade. I was still working in
exact copies in 1990, and some young troops were still living in them. Save
two ..let the rest go.
