Council for West Virginia Archaeology Annual Spring Meeting and Workshop,
2001,
Council Meeting: Friday, May 18th, 7 p.m., Board Room (Room 100), Ramada

Workshop: Saturday, May 19th.   Focus on HISTORIC CERAMICS,  10 a.m. to 5
p.m.,  Independence Hall, 16th and Market, Wheeling, West Virginia, with
tour to Oglebay Institute.

This workshop will focus on historic ceramics, with emphasis on the West
Virginia ceramic industry and the analysis of historic period
archaeological assemblages.  Participants are encouraged to bring ceramics
for discussion.  Bibliographical handouts will also be provided.

Lunch at the River City Ale Works, Artisan Center (within walking distance
of Independence Hall) and post-lunch tour of the Wymer Museum's collection
of West Virginia ceramics, also at Artisan Center. At the end of our
afternoon session we will carpool/caravan to Oglebay Institute for a
special tour of their Wheeling area ceramics collection.

The workshop will be lead by James Mitchell, Chief Curator of the West
Virginia State Museum in the Cultural Center and a specialist in historic
ceramics.   Mr. Mitchell, who holds degrees from the University of
Wisconsin, Winterthur Museum, and Shippensburg University,  started his
career at the Bennington Museum, whose pottery is familiar to most
archaeologists.  He helped build the decorative arts collection at the New
Jersey State Museum, set up the Carborundum Museum of Ceramics, and served
as Curator for the Pennsylvania State Museum before coming to West
Virginia.  All historical archaeologists present please bring some
exemplary sherds and plan to  assist in an afternoon discussion session on
ceramic analyses and identification issues.

Registration Fee is $35 for Council members, $45 for non-members.  This
covers admission to the Wymer Museum and Oglebay Institute.

Directions.  Independence Hall is located on the corner of 16th and Market
Streets. From I-70 take Exit 1A South on Main Street to 16th, turn left and
go one block to Market. Parking is available behind the building.  Go
several blocks further north on Market to 12th street for Ramada Plaza City
Center hotel.

Lodging: Twenty rooms are being held until April 18th at the Ramada Plaza
City Center (old McClure Hotel), 1200 Market St., Wheeling, within easy
walking distance of Independence Hall.  Contact them at 800-862-5873,
