Mission San Antonio de Padua Archaeological Field School
June 17 - July 27, 2001

An intensive six-week combination of excavation and laboratory analysis of
historical materials from the married neophyte quarters at Mission San
Antonio, in southern Monterey County, California. The mission was founded
in 1771, the third of 21 Franciscan religious establishments in Spanish
California. By 1805, the mission was home to 1300 Salinan Indians. It was
secularized in 1834 by the Mexican government.

Today, Mission San Antonio de Padua is one of only two original California
missions that still exists in its natural environment. The archaeological
materials are mainly undisturbed.

The field school is offered as a six-week archaeology class by California
Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The class is open to all
adults with an interest in the historical archaeology of Spanish California.

Total fee for this course is $1,600.00 (which includes academic tutition,
room and board). To request an application, contact Dr. Robert L. Hoover,
1144 Buchon St., San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, or e-mail him at
