Both Binford and, yes, ever Ian Hodder have been key and poistive
figures in the history or archaeology. Indeed, no one does archaeology
today who is not under the positive influence of the
"New Archaeology" revolution, regardless of its shortcomings or
failings. The Post-Processualists are also important and, in fact, it is in
historical archaeology (cf. prehistory) that some of their
interpretations work.

As far as selecting our own Saint, who else is qualified. How do we
do it - by fiat, ad hoc proclamation etc., the same way we created
the SHA, CNEHA, SPMA or ASHA.

The Patron Saint: J.C. (Pinky) Harrington
The Anti-Christ: (if a group) the SAA; (if a person) ?? I do
not think we have any (unless some of the underwater looters
who pretend to be archaeologists) ?? For general archaeology
there are several: H. Himmler (funding agent), Gustav Kossinna,
Frank ------ (South----) excavated the ------ C--- Site (you
know who I mean), Belzoni, and a lot more. I would be also
tempted to say, external to the field, all Republicans but Teddy
Roosevelt was an indirect major supporter and Barry
Goldwater was a direct support of both archaeology and
        anthropology.

Finally on lawyers, remember that the SHA presented an SHA Award of
Merit in 1995 to THOMAS M. MAYES, Lawyer for the National Trust for
Historic Preservation, for his outstanding work in helping to protect
the archaeological heritage of the United States.
