Mike,
I can refer you to the excavation of the Atlanta City Garbage Crematory, a
large turn-of-the-century landfill once located near downtown Atlanta, and
in the ROW of the MARTA rapid transit corridor. It was discovered and
recorded in 1978, state site # 9FU91, and reported in the contract report by
Linda F. Carnes and Roy S. Dickens, Archaeological Impact Studies on the
Marta North and South Lines, contract TZ600-M93-03, issued by Georgia State
University. The deposits were 15 ft. deep, with layering which resembled
wagon-loads of refuse, and covered about 2 acres. Thousands of artifacts
were retrieved from this site. Historical documents provided a use date of
1892-1915, but there were subsequent deposits made by others after it
closed. This site is also mentioned in Dickens book (1982) Archaeology of
Urban America, Academic Press.
Hope this is of use and good luck.
Linda

Subject: Landfill Site Reference Request
We are undertaking a project involving excavation of a portion of an
extremely large (perhaps, at one time, several hundred meters by several
hundred meters in size) landfill site near Salt Lake City that dates ca.
1932-1942. The portions of the dump which were excavated reached depths of
13 - 15 feet of solid domestic trash (very little soil mixed in).
Do persons on the list know of other landfill or large dump sites which have
been excavated and reported on? Are there references which could be useful
as comparisons with such a site? Rathjie's materials are known about.
Perhaps there are other helpful suggestions? Thanks for any help which may
be offered.
