Sir Mortimer Wheeler had no faults! I first read "Archaeology From the
Earth" in highschool and it is still good. Also look at "Still Digging"
his autobiography and, well you are at it, "Rome Beyond the Imperial
Frontiers." Classics - all.

I think digging in arbitrary levels was invented in California by Walt
Disney.
