There has been some work. Louise and I did plane-table surveys back
in the seventies, and subsequently a navigation lock was found in the
tailrace. Unfortunately, the carnival-like development of the site
has obliterated much of the possible archaeology. It is worth
checking, though. Read George Alfred Townsend's book "The Entailed
Hat" for background.
