Ivor Noël Hume, in his classic HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY (New York:
Alfred A. Knopf, 1969), has quite a bit to say about wells (check the
index).  And what he has to say about the very real dangers involved
with their excavation is just as pertinent now as it was thirty-two
years ago.
