Many critics are composers or would be composers. In fact many of the
people who are now remembered primarily as critics thought of themselves
as composers: Hoffman, deFetis - and more and more Virgil Thomson. Schumann
was better known as critic than composer for a portion of his life, so too
was Wagner a published critic before he had written anything notable.
