I'm not very good at making comparisons between performances, but I highly
recommend Charles Rosen's set of the last six sonatas on Sony Classics
(it's a specially-priced 2 CD set).  To me, the performance seems very
transparent, as if the composer is speaking directly without the distortion
of a performer.
