I already knew (and heralded) Finland's status in having the world's
highest rate of wireless communication (and yes, I love my Nokia with
its 8-day standard battery on standby), but found out today from NPR that
the country also has -- by far -- the greatest per-capita concentration
of symphonic music: 30 professional orchestras in a nation of 5 million.
A major share of their standard repertory is contemporary music written
by Twenty-somethings fresh out of the music school named for the great
Swede, Sibelius <G>. These are relatives a Magyar can be proud of. (And
man! do they dance a mean tango too.)
