To my remark, based soley on remarks of the HIP keyboardest Robert Levin,
that Bach was the third choice for the St. Thomas job, Tom Connor writes:

You can fault the committee for poor judgment.  Paraphrasing Levin, some
members thought that they were settling for mediocrity.  But poor judgment
was more than compensated for by extraordinary luck.
