One of the series that I've found very appealing is the Symphony #2 by
George Templeton Strong. In Australia, we are seeing a superb documentary
series on New York, with frequent quotations from the diary of George
Templeton Strong, the father of the composer. This was news to me but
apparently the diary is very well-known in the US.
Incidentally, although the company responsible, WGBH Boston, makes some
excellent documentaries including some on music, I always find the name
amusing. In some parts of the world, GBH is slang for grievous bodily
harm.
