A very different 20th century music list; which i think reflects more
broadly the experience of the classical music tradition in this century.
Typed by genre, one work per composer, most have multiple recordings; but
i'm not in a position to add the disc numbers here.
Dramatic:
1) Igor Strawinski - Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring)... too many
good recordings to list
2) Ralph Vaughan Williams - Job: A masque for dancing... Boult (any of them)
3) Leonard Bernstein - Westside Story... look for Bernstein conducting; or
the original motion picture soundtrack
Orchestral:
4) Bela Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra (tough split w/ the quartets, i
admit)... liike Strawinski too many good recordings to list
Choral:
XIAN Xinghai - Yellow River Cantata
Mikis Theodorakis - Canto General
Concertante:
George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue
Sergey Rakhmaninoff - Rhapsody on a theme of Pagannini
Chamber (the weakest area of my expertise; & therefore the most problematic
suggestion):
Charles Ives
Aaron Copland - Piano Variations... Smit
All the best,
