The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. I've
got a letter from Mr. Peter Readman, Chairman of the COE. He says, among
other things, what follows:
"As we enter our 20th anniversary year it is a good time for those
of us who play in the Orchestra and who work behind the scenes to
take stock. One fact seems clear: in the musical world we have
continued to build on the reputation for quality we established in
our first decade, and yet we have had difficulty in getting our name
known in the wider world of the concert-going and record-buying public
(...). The record of our second decade speaks for itself. Over the
90's we have achieved numerous outstanding results in which we all
- including all of you, our Friends and supporters - can take some
pleasure. A long list is always boring, but I thought I would mention
a few of our highlights to remind you of some of our achievements
and the acknowledgement they have received in the musical world.
1991 - Schubert Fierrabras (Abbado, DG) - 5 International prizes.
1992 - Beethoven Symphony cycle (Harnoncourt, Teldec) - 14
international prizes and Gramophone `Record of The Year`.
1993 - Beethoven Missa Solemnis (Harnoncourt, Teldec) - 8
international prizes.
1994 - Schumann Symphony cycle (Harnoncourt, Teldec) (...).
1995 - Mozart Marriage of Figaro (Harnoncourt) - Salzburg Festival.
1996 - Mozart Cosi Fan Tutte (Solti, Decca) - The Times "Record of
the Year".
1997 - Mozart Don Giovanni (Abbado, DG) - Sunday Telegraph "Record
of the Year".
1998 - Schumann Genoveva (Harnoncourt, Teldec) (...).
1999 - Sibelius Symphony cycle (Berglund, Finlandia) - 3 international
prizes.
2000 - Brahms Symphony cycle (Berglund, Finlandia) - To be released.
This is a hard act to follow and will require as much enthusiasm,
energy and financial support as we have all contributed over the last
20 years".
Therefore, long live to the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, say I.
Regards,
Wilson Pereira.
