Also Roger Sessions, Ernst Toch, Egon Wellesz, Benjamin Frankel, to name
four serialists (however "academically correct"- shame on Mr. Proffitt for
hiding behind that cliche!) who contributed vibrant, memorable, even
astounding symphonies to the 20th-century repertoire.
Sorry, just had a bee up my bonnett (sp?). It's out now. I'm fine now,
really.;)
Havergal Brian, anyone? Max Butting (only seen a symphony by, not heard?)
As to American symphonists- Gene Gutsche (5th symphony- not so impressed
by, but reasonably good and worth hearing)? Paul Creston (.excellent., I'm
sure someone's mentioned him already...)? Vittorio Giannini (syms. 3 and 4
come to mind?) Quincy Porter (composer of two fine symphonies I wouldn't
mind seeing on CD one bit...)? Samuel Barber (only 2 symphonies but each
so very good)? Easley Blackwood (5 symphonies- I've only heard #1, I don't
even think #3 has been performed- opportunity there)? David Stanley Smith
(3rd symphony premiered by the Cleveland orchestra in 1931, composer of a
number of, I'm told, interesting string quartets?) One wonders.
