While on the subject of Bax, I've updated the Bax web site to include
Rob Barnett's review of the new Naxos recording of the Fifth Symphony.
More reviews of this symphony will follow in the next week. My initial
impression is that it is a superb performance recorded in near
state-of-the-art sound. I'm not as taken with Lloyd-Jones' performance of
The Tale The Pine-Trees Knew which seems rather perfunctory. I felt the
same about his November Woods. Maybe he responds more to the symphonies
than the tone poems. Regardless of that, the disc is essential for a very
impressive 5th Symphony.
