For those theoretically inclined I would suggest the "Schubert" chapter
in Robert Simpson's "Symphony" anthology (say that three times fast!).
The writer (whose name escapes me) demonstrates how two composers (in this
case Schubert and Beethoven) make vastly different music out of similar and
sometimes identical thematic material.
