Perhaps someone can recognize a Burgess novel I once read in which a
pianist for silent films, too drunk again to show up for work, in a
desperate attempt to salvage his job, teaches the rudiments of music and
piano playing to his daughter in one hour (and one chapter of the book),
explaining the piano keys, the major and minor scales, the frequently used
chords and the moods with which they are associated, before sending her off
to substitute for him at the theater.
