As you probably know, I've posted a number of "midi" performances" of my
own, from the WTC.  Many listeners don't know they're midi.  I'm not sure
what the implications of that are.  However, I entirely agree about the
educational value of midi.  With respect to Bach, it enables me to hear
relationships between voices that were not readily apparant to my ear.
