Hello to all! I have just joined the list and am looking forward to what I
will learn from you all. I am a childbirth educator and a doula, and work
with many breastfeeding moms.

I have a client who has hx of fibrocystic breast lumps - only 2 so far, one
was removed, and one is still there but not growing. At 34 weeks pregnant,
she discovered a larger lump in the right breast. She brought it to the
attention of her CNM, who dismissed it as a plugged milk duct, saying that
some women's milk comes in early. This lump has continued to grow and is
massive. Breast ultrasound revealed it is larger than 4cm wide, and it is
deep into the breast.

Mom is breastfeeding. Supply is limited on that side - she says she doesn't
have as much milk on the right side as she does the left, but she does have
milk.

She went to a breast surgeon today who told her some disturbing things. The
surgeon said that sometimes after an aspiration is done, a fistula will form
and milk will leak out through it. She said it was even more common during
a biopsy, and that if that happens, this mom will have to quit breastfeeding
due to the risk of infection. Surgeon said that it would be impossible to
just breastfeed on one side because the milk will not completely dry up.
Surgeon also insisted on a biopsy no matter what the outcome of the
aspiration test is.

My client is extremely dedicated to breastfeeding her baby, and is just
devastated that she would have to stop. I suspect that she has been given
incorrect information, but I wanted to ask you for your opinions and
experience on this. I also wanted to see if any of you know how to find
breast surgeons who are experienced in surgery on lactating women.

Thank you ever so much!
Jennifer Davis, ICCE-CD
